The BBC Examines "What is Socialism?" It's Animated!

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

What exactly is socialism? Stephen Bush, political editor at the New Statesman, shares his view on the origins, philosophy, meaning and future of socialism.

Socialism in simple terms represents an economic and political system. It includes new thinking about economic fairness and equitable social organization. It believes that the means of making, moving, and trading wealth should be owned or controlled by the citizen contributors or workers that comprise society and therefore have a say in how the apparatus is run. People who agree with this type of system are called Socialists and given that we are a country with a 2-party system seek to engage the political party most likely to represent the mainstream and concern for common good which is the Democratic party.

Socialism represents a positive future

The concept of socialism is once again capturing the public's imagination. Not only are a growing number of young people sympathetic to the idea, but many politicians are actively pushing policies to advance it.

But the question many Americans are asking is, what is socialism and how will it impact me?

At the base level, socialism simply means stronger government control over the economy.

When one thinks of a properly run government that represents the true will of the people this naturally would include stewardship of the environment, providing free education, health care, government mandated wage requirements, and more restrictions and regulations on the power of Oligarchs, CEOs, corporations and power wielding too-big to fail businesses.

The counter argument is that all this government control also means a lot more taxes to pay or that it takes money away from the military. Although socialism and its programs are pursued in the name of promoting equality, there have been many outmoded models and bad characters that have taken the name of "socialism" and tainted it - as their outcomes were anything but representative of what true democratic socialism offers & stands for.

It is difficult to argue the benefits of socialism when a Republican (for instance) may shrug the ideas off arguing socialism brings sky-high taxes, poor health care, choice restrictions, supply shortages, lackluster innovation and more government rules that restrict individual freedom. There is nothing in their world perspective that makes socialism a promising ideal.

Socialism needs to dismantle the very 'Mass Trance' mechanism that keeps us stuck in the current paradigm where there is so much disparity and taints a free market system that should provide opportunity, and promote progress and economic advancement for all.

If the brainwashed right-wing could only use their social-imagination they would realize their dreamworld in a socially fair environment where creativity, conscious capitalism for the goal of societal betterment and individual freedom reign supreme of over greed and selfish gain.

We need YOU now to join our cause and declare yourself a SOCIALIST DEMOCRAT - help us spread the word and together we shall overcome the crapitalist choke-hold.
